Chapter 17

NELLIE

Nellie didn’t think this was a great idea, if she were being honest. Training the clans. Uniting them. She would much rather have let the clans fester as they would, a product of their own mistakes. However, there was more than just the livelihood of the clans at stake. thousands of innocent humans could be lost, thanks to Darroc, and she would never let that happen.

No, she had agreed to this meeting of the clans, to their training, because she knew Faria would never have left them to die, which they undoubtedly would without them. She had taken it upon herself to make sure their outcome was a positive one. Nellie hoped Faria was right in thinking Darroc would return, and that luck would be on their side when he did. Hadn’t Moira mentioned that they were all chosen ones, or something?

Nellie walked back toward the tent she shared with Faria, thinking of the B.A.E.—Big Awkward Event—that had occurred between Faria and Jamison. Nellie had stood back, watching the two pin each other to the ground and she had to admit—it was…hot. The chemistry between Jamison and Faria bounced off each other and influenced those surrounding them. She could see the members of each clan wrestle with their inner beast, as if it were the start of mating season.

Of course, Faria was an alpha in her own way, most dominant of anyone there besides Nellie, but she was still surprised to see how much her power could influence the shifters without trying. Some had bowed their heads in submission, and the more alpha of those around seemed to double or triple in size, their animals calling to the frenzy in front of them.

It had lasted no longer than a minute but Nellie’s own heart beat as if she were the one that fought. She had found it hard to resist looking at the others, searching for who she found attractive or wanted to challenge to a fight. She swallowed down the pheromones suffocating the crowd.

She was surprised, shocked in fact, because even Hunter and Faria hadn’t had that effect when they were together. Although, she did only witness them when Hunter was in his muted, human form. Perhaps they were just as powerful together. Or, perhaps it was just the power behind shifter energy.

“That was…interesting,” Tommy had murmured next to her. Nellie shivered, still feeling the attraction in the air. She took a step back, careful not to look at him.

“Sure was. At least now everyone recognizes the dominance of who is in charge here,” Nellie said. “I’m gonna go check on her.”

So that was how Nellie found herself just outside of their shared tent, feeling suddenly awkward and unsure whether she should enter or leave Faria alone. Her old self would have just run in, unannounced, but now there were walls where there weren’t before.

“Faria?” Nellie called, deciding to stay. “Can I come in?”

She heard Faria’s ragged breathing but no response. She entered with a flourish, tossing the tent flap open dramatically.
